Bitcoin Pizza Day
May 22, 2010 — Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 BTC for two Papa John's pizzas, the first known commercial Bitcoin transaction. Now an annual crypto holiday.
On May 22, 2010, Florida-based programmer Laszlo Hanyecz posted on Bitcointalk offering 10,000 BTC for two pizzas. A 19-year-old in the UK accepted, ordering two Papa John's pizzas to Laszlo's address and receiving the 10,000 BTC in exchange.
At the time, the trade was worth roughly $41 — Bitcoin had no real market yet. At later peaks the 10,000 BTC were worth over $1 billion. May 22 is now commemorated as "Bitcoin Pizza Day" — a cultural reminder both of Bitcoin's early days and of the opportunity costs of spending appreciating assets.
