Dogecoin

The original memecoin — launched 2013 as a Litecoin fork joking about the Doge meme — now one of the largest cryptocurrencies by market cap.

Dogecoin was launched in December 2013 by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a deliberate joke: a Litecoin fork branded around the Doge Shiba Inu meme. The community ethos has remained more playful than most crypto projects.

The token saw multiple speculative cycles — most prominently the 2021 Elon Musk-driven rally — and now sits among the top cryptocurrencies by market cap. Despite the lack of a serious roadmap or active development, DOGE has the most enduring brand of any memecoin.
